How to Get a Contractor License in Suwannee County

Updated October 2026

Suwannee County is a rural county in north-central Florida. Its permitting is simple and almost entirely online: in 2024 the Suwannee County Building Department moved to the Cloudpermit system, and contractors register and pull permits there.

Certified vs registered in Suwannee County

Florida's two license types work the same way here as everywhere:

License Basis Where it is good
State certified State exams, including Business and Finance Anywhere in Florida
State registered A local license (certificate of competency) registered with DBPR Only where you met local requirements (F.S. 489.117)

The county's Cloudpermit page shows that Suwannee County offers local license routes alongside state registration. It lists these contractor applications:

Registering a state license

To register, Cloudpermit says you must return the registration form with:

  1. your state license;
  2. liability insurance; and
  3. workers' compensation insurance or an exemption.

If you have registered with Suwannee County before, do not submit a new registration. Find your existing license in Cloudpermit, open Options and choose Renew Registration.

This matches state law: under F.S. 489.113(4)(a), a state certified contractor only has to show a current certificate and pay the normal local fees to get a permit.

Permit rules worth knowing

Check with the Tax Collector about what your business needs, and with the city if your office is inside city limits. The main Tax Collector office is in Live Oak.

Common starting points are the residential contractor and general contractor licenses, along with roofing, HVAC, plumbing and electrical.
