A Sample Question

Every answer, explained

A contractor's planned annual fixed overhead is $180,000. Its gross profit margin on jobs, after direct costs, is 20% of revenue. What annual revenue is needed to break even?
A. $900,000 ✓
B. $216,000
C. $720,000
D. $360,000
Why: Break-even revenue = fixed costs ÷ gross margin ratio = $180,000 ÷ 0.20 = $900,000. Multiplying $180,000 × 1.20 = $216,000 confuses a markup on overhead with the revenue needed.
