How to Get a Contractor License in Levy County

Updated October 2026

Levy County, on the Gulf coast between Gainesville and the Big Bend, issues building permits through the Levy County Development Department in Bronson. The process is still partly paper-based, so knowing what to bring saves a second trip.

Certified or registered: the state side

Florida has two kinds of construction license. A certified contractor (license number starting with "C") passed the state exam and may contract anywhere in Florida. A registered contractor (number starting with "R") holds a local certificate of competency and may contract only in the jurisdictions where that local license is held (F.S. 489.105, F.S. 489.117). Every Division I and Division II certified license issued by the Construction Industry Licensing Board requires passing the state Business and Finance exam. Electrical and alarm licenses come from a separate board and use their own exam.

The county's Building Permit page explains how applications move:

What the permit application asks for

The permit application asks for the flood zone, elevation and minimum finished floor elevation, the cost of improvements, square footage, the power company (the form lists CFEC, Duke, Clay and SECO), and the contractor's business name, state license number and license holder name.

Depending on the job, the county's checklist includes:

Document Typical use
Notice of Commencement Jobs over the lien law threshold
Site plan and zoning approval All new structures
Engineered plans and truss engineering New construction
Product approvals and form Windows, doors, roofing and other regulated products
Energy calculations, Manual J, AHRI certificate, duct layout HVAC and new homes
Septic permit, utility application, right-of-way affidavit Site work
Mobile home blocking and tie-down layout Manufactured homes
Pool safety barrier affidavit and flow calculations Pools

The county asks for Florida product approval documentation, so keep approval numbers for the windows, doors and roofing you install.

Owner-builders

Levy County's owner-builder affidavit follows F.S. 489.103(7). Owners who hire unlicensed workers take on liability, and the county reminds them that the Construction Industry Licensing Board may be unable to help with losses caused by unlicensed contractors.

Business tax receipt

We did not find an official Levy County page describing a county local business tax for contractors. Contact the Levy County Tax Collector, which has offices in Bronson, Chiefland and Williston, and the city where your business is located.
