How to Get a Contractor License in Hardee County

Updated October 2026

Hardee County sits inland between Polk and DeSoto counties, with Wauchula as the county seat. Permits are issued by the county Building Department, and the online application spells out what a contractor must upload. The biggest practical point for contractors: every permit application needs current license and insurance documents for the contractor and each subcontractor.

Certified or registered: the state side

Florida has two kinds of construction license. A certified contractor (license number starting with "C") passed the state exam and may contract anywhere in Florida. A registered contractor (number starting with "R") holds a local certificate of competency and may contract only in the jurisdictions where that local license is held (F.S. 489.105, F.S. 489.117). Every Division I and Division II certified license issued by the Construction Industry Licensing Board requires passing the state Business and Finance exam. Electrical and alarm licenses come from a separate board and use their own exam.

Hardee County Building Department

The Hardee County Building Department is part of Community Development. Its stated mission is to check plans and inspect work for compliance with the Florida Building Code, the National Electrical Code, the Florida Fire Prevention Code and related state rules. The department quotes Florida Building Code section 105.1: anyone who intends to build, alter, repair, demolish or replace regulated systems must first apply for and obtain a permit.

Applications go through the county's iWorQ permit portal. The portal notes that not every permit can be reviewed online; large plans and new construction should be submitted through the permitting department.

Required uploads with a permit application

Upload Notes from the county portal
Contractor and subcontractor licenses All of them, current
Insurance certificates For contractor and subcontractors
Contractor authorization or power of attorney If someone other than the qualifier applies
Zoning letter or city sign-off From county Planning and Development, or from the City of Wauchula, City of Bowling Green or Town of Zolfo Springs
Site plan Setbacks, other structures, septic, well and driveway
Engineered plans, riser diagrams, material specs, anchoring plans As applicable to the job

The county warns that incomplete applications will be returned and delayed.

Working inside the towns

The portal requires a city sign-off from Wauchula, Bowling Green or Zolfo Springs for work inside those municipalities, along with the county application. Factor that extra step into your schedule.

Business tax receipt

The Hardee County Tax Collector in Wauchula is the office that would sell any county local business tax receipt under F.S. 205.053. We did not find an official Hardee County page describing a county business tax for contractors, so confirm directly with the Tax Collector, and with the town if your shop is inside Wauchula, Bowling Green or Zolfo Springs.

Housing rehabilitation bid list

Hardee County Community Development keeps a contractor application for its Housing Rehabilitation Programs bid list. The application asks for a business license, insurance certificates, a W-9 and reference letters. This is optional and separate from permitting.
