How to Get a Contractor License in Gadsden County

Updated October 2026

Gadsden County sits just west of Tallahassee, with Quincy as its county seat. It has its own Construction Industry Licensing Board for locally registered contractors, and its Building Department takes all permit types online. Here is what we could confirm on official county pages.

Certified vs. registered in Gadsden County

A state certified contractor (license number starting with "C") passed the state exams and can contract anywhere in Florida without meeting local competency rules (F.S. 489.105). A state registered contractor (license number starting with "R") holds a local competency license and can contract only where that local license is recognized (F.S. 489.117).

The county's licensing board page says it the same way: "A certified license allows you to practice throughout Florida. A registered license allows you to practice only within the locale you are registered in."

Gadsden County has a local Construction Industry Licensing Board. Per the county, it meets to consider license applications, review disciplinary cases and hold informal hearings. Contractors "registered to do work in Gadsden County" can apply to go before the board. It is separate from the state CILB at DBPR.

Business tax

We could not find an official Gadsden County page describing local business tax requirements. Ask the Gadsden County Tax Collector, and your city if your business is located inside Quincy, Havana, Chattahoochee, Midway, Gretna or Greensboro.

Working near Tallahassee

Many contractors in Gadsden also work in Leon County and Tallahassee. A state certificate avoids separate local competency requirements in each jurisdiction, though you will still register with each building department.

State license guides

The county steps above come after the state license. For the state side, start with the Florida licensing hub and the trade guides: general contractor, roofing, HVAC, plumbing and electrical. Every CILB construction license, Division I or II, requires the Business and Finance exam: 120 questions, 6.5 hours, 70% to pass. Pearson VUE exam performance reports show a 56% first-time pass rate statewide for that exam in 2025.
